The study, which involved more than 600 people, has been carried out taking advantage of the actions of the campaign at street level
The 78 activities carried out in the municipalities of La Vega Baja have reached 15,000 residents, who have been informed about the activity carried out by the entity
The Vega Baja Sostenible Consortium has carried out for the first time a survey on the vision that the citizens of the Vega Baja have of the management of waste and the environment, in which more than 600 people have participated, and in which the data show that more and more the citizens of the region are aware of the environment and the importance of correct waste management.
The survey was carried out during the street campaign that the Consortium has developed during the months of April and May in the 27 municipalities of the region. The neighbors have answered five simple questions on topics related to selective collection or the proliferation of plastics in the Segura, among other issues.
The responses show that more and more people know the Vega Baja Sustainable Consortium and what its functions are, since 30.8% of respondents said they know what the Consortium is, although 69% said they did not know it. The president of the Consortium, Manuel Pineda, explained that “this type of actions is important, such as the campaign at street level, talks or environmental education, because they bring the institutions closer to the citizen and can know first-hand what measures are being taken to increase recycling rates, for example. ” According to the data of this study, most of the respondents, 92.32%, prefer the current system before the ‘door to door’ in which the containers disappear and the waste is collected every day at the doors of the domiciles. Among those who preferred the ‘door to door’, 7.6%, argued their choice indicating that it is a way for people who do not separate their household waste to do so through this system.
On the other hand, more and more are aware that in 2020 we will have to separate organic waste in a new container, 23.78%, and almost all respondents said they would be willing to collaborate in the community composting of organic waste , 82.02%.
The survey has also served to know first hand what is the degree of knowledge and involvement of residents in the issues related to waste in the region. A current issue is that of plastic containers in the Segura River. The majority of respondents, 92.69%, are in favor of the Consorcio collaborating in finding a solution to prevent the proliferation of these containers and other urban waste in the riverbed. In this sense Pineda has ensured that “in the coming years the municipalities will have to continue with this task of awareness as the new Comprehensive Waste Plan emphasizes the incorporation of environmental educators in local entities.”
Campaign at street level
The Vega Baja Sostenible Consortium has completed the actions at street level, which have been developed during the months of April and May, with a positive balance, since there has been a great acceptance by the 15,000 people who have approached the exhibitor of the entity to know in detail what the Consortium is and what its objectives are in terms of waste, recycling, among other aspects.
During the month of April the participation was of more than 6,000 people and, during the month of May almost 8,000 people have visited the Consortium’s stand and have been interested in the actions carried out by the entity. There have also been numerous children who have participated in children’s games on recycling that the entity has developed in each of the municipalities of the region.
The aim of the Consortium has been from the beginning to bring to the citizenship information about the entity, so that they know the reality of the waste of the Vega Baja. Awareness of recycling has also been very present, especially with recreational activities for the little ones. In total, more than ten thousand cloth bags of the Consortium, two thousand boxes of pencils and more than ten thousand explanatory leaflets have been distributed.
